Giovanna Finzi - Research

Control System Group

Outline

Giovanna Finzi, born in Milan in 1951, was graduated at the Politecnico of Milan in Electronic Engineering in 1975. Since 1994 she has been full professor of Automatic Control at the University of Brescia, where she teaches the courses of Modelling and Simulation and Complex Systems Control. From 1999 to 2009 she was coordinator of the teaching activities and President of the Courses Council in the frame of ICT Engineering. She was vice-director of the Department of Electronics for Automation.

Since 2010 she is chairperson of the Research Council and member of the Academic Senate in the University of Brescia. She has been appointed to represent her University in the European Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE). In this frame she takes care in particular of the internationalization of doctoral education and of the enhancement of opportunities and instruments in order to sign international scientific and didactic agreements. She is also working to the development of evaluation criteria for Doctoral Schools.

She was appointed from Italian Scientific Research Ministry as national delegate in EUROTRAC-2 International Executive Committee (1996-2003), in several COST Actions Management Committees (715, Meteorology Applied to Urban Air Pollution; 728, Enhancing meso-scale meteorological modelling capabilities for air pollution and dispersion applications; ES0602, Towards a European Network on Chemical Weather Forecasting and Information Systems and ES1004, European framework for online integrated air quality and meteorology modelling). She is member of the National MC of ANIPLA (Associazione Nazionale Italiana per l'Automazione). Since 2006 she was appointed by MIUR as national delegate both in EMEP Task Force on Measurements and Modelling (TFMM) and in the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution in the frame of the International Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP).

She is member of IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) TC on Modelling & Control of Environmental Systems, of AGU (American Geophysical Association), of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

She is member of the European Science Foundation (ESF) Pool of reviewers, she was appointed as evaluator for the FP7 scientific programme, besides being regularly asked to referee papers submitted to international journals.

Giovanna Finzi is working in the field of environmental control and management in the frame of national and international scientific projects. Her main research interest is focused on air pollution modelling and optimal control methodologies with applications both in urban and industrial areas. She is coordinator of the ESMA (http://automatica.ing.unibs.it/esma/esma.html) research team working in the Department of Information Engineering on environmental decision support systems aimed to the study, management and planning of efficient strategies of pollution control and abatement. The results of her studies are published on many international journals and have been presented to relevant scientific conferences.
